Travel Tips

  • Mozambique is a high risk malaria area and it is thus strongly recommended that the necessary precautions and prophylactics be taken.
  • Insect repellents, sun block, shade umbrellas, light shoes or sandals and a sun hat is a must, with temperatures reaching the high 30°C
  • The currency in Mozambique is Meticals although South African Rand and US Dollars are widely accepted. It is advisable to convert some money into smaller denomination Meticals as many local villages & local craftsman trade in the local currency only.
  • If travelling by road from South Africa it is necessary to obtain third party insurance and a temporary vehicle permit at the border. For this purpose you will need to have the original registration papers for your vehicle/s and a valid driver’s license.
  • South Africans do not require a visa to enter Mozambique.
  • Fresh produce, meat & forgotten items can be purchased from a few shops in Maputo, Xai Xai, Maxixe or Vilanculos. Most other villages en route do not have formal shops but are a treasure trove of local produce and souvenirs. For those who have a love of chillies then a stop at Massinga is a must.
