The town of Vilanculos is 145km North of Mahangate – 103 km on a good single lane highway and 42km on 4 x4 terrains. Vilanculos is the main gateway to the Bazaruto Archipelago and offers visitors a lively night life & atmospheric restaurants.
These range from pizza parlours to top end restaurants serving excellent, freshly caught seafood in the native Portuguese style cooking.
The Wildlife Sanctuary is a 45min boat cruise from Vilanculos. Any one of the 4 key islands of the Archipelago – namely Bazuroto, Benguerra, Magaruque and Santa Carolina can also be reached via a short boat trip. The famous 2 mile reef is a must see for snorkelers and scuba enthusiasts.
Pomene is a town approximately 60km south of Mahangate. Similar to Mahangate it is known for its unspoiled beach and clear water. Pomene is a popular diving destination with the Zambia shoal starting in relatively close proximity and stretching towards Mahangate.
